To be able to hire people worldwide, we require the applicants to be freelancers or contractors who are responsible for their own equipment, working hours, and taxes. Maintainers track their time and work for an agreed hourly rate. Developers work on Bounties, tasks with a fixed budget and defined deliverables.
We use GitHub tickets to organize our work, have bi-weekly sprints, discuss on Slack to sync with the team, and are fully remote with flexible working time. MapLibre's finances are transparent and publicly accessible at https://opencollective.com/maplibre. As a freelancer, you will invoice your work to OpenSourceCollective, a US non-profit organization.
We would like to motivate in particular existing community members to apply because you are the ones who know the projects already and made MapLibre the nice place it is today!
The roles are open to part-time work, so if you for example take care of your family and would like to work one hour per day on open-source, then it is completely fine to apply with an availability of a few hours per week.
